Abu Dhabi, February 28, 2023: The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) will host an exciting lineup of live music and cinema events throughout March as part of its Season 8 spring schedule. More information on the events is available below: Event: Balimaya Project, UAE Premiere with an opening set by Shilpa Ananth
Details: Balimaya Project was formed in 2019 and is now led by composer/arranger and UK-based Djembe player, Yahael Camara Onono. Balimaya Project uses the repertoire and instrumentation of the Mandé peoples of Senegal and Mali as the bridge to bring the folkloric West African music together with the jazz sounds of Black London. The band performs unique and exciting music that seeks to reclaim their ancestral culture. The concert features an opening set by Indian vocalist, songwriter, and performing artist Shilpa Ananth, whose music fuses the dreamy landscapes of South India with Soul, Jazz and Electronic influences.

Event: CinemaNA: Black Box Cinema, presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program
Details: Created by Emirati filmmaker Nawaf al Janahi, Black Box Cinema has been a landmark in Abu Dhabi International Book Fair since 2014, focused on presenting Arab short films, spreading film culture to new circles and giving different audiences the chance to come closer to Arab cinema. Presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program, Black Box Cinema presents a selection of five Arab short films that were screened in previous editions. The program features “Eye & Mermaid” directed by Shahad Ameen; “The Intruder” directed by Majid Al Ansari; “Mid-Way” directed by Rola Shamas; “Sabeel” directed by Khalid Al Mahmood; and “Sarah” directed by Alaa Abo Farraj.

Details: The international star pianist, Bruce Liu, draws on various sources of inspiration for his art: European refinement, Chinese long tradition, North American dynamism, and openness. Presented by Abu Dhabi Festival, the winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition presents an Arab World Premiere with a thrilling program of classical and romantic highlights in a spectacular recital full of enthusiasm, passion, and excitement.

Details: Since his gold medal win at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009, Haochen Zhang has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe, and Asia with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination, and spectacular virtuosity. Presented by Abu Dhabi Festival, the acclaimed pianist from Shanghai performs in a unique recital that showcases the fearless imagination and spectacular musical mastery for which he is known.

Details: Recognized as a star of the future and lauded for her musical maturity, expressive interpretations and impressive technical ability, sixteen-year-old British-Chinese violin prodigy Leia Zhu performs a beautiful repertoire of Mozart, Strauss, Debussy, Wieniawski, and Sarasate, accompanied by versatile Swiss pianist Benjamin Engeli. The virtuoso, whose solo career includes performing with the London Symphony Orchestra, displays her renowned talent and musical creativity in this special recital.
